The Connection of Suicide and Trauma

Creating Hope Through Action.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and more than 700,000 suicides worldwide are reported each year (World Health Organization). Each death by suicide is not only deeply tragic but also profoundly impacts individuals, families, and communities of the deceased. The immediate aftermath is marked by shock, grief, guilt, and intense sadness. Family members and friends left behind are also likely to experience a range of mental health issues: depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder are common diagnoses for relatives and friends of individuals who die by suicide.  Although there are many factors that contribute to a heightened risk for suicide, trauma significantly impacts an individual’s suicide risk. Undergoing a trauma can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety — all of which are associated with an increased risk of suicide.  Left untreated, trauma can exacerbate pre-existing mental health conditions and contribute to the development of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.  Having the appropriate support and receiving trauma informed treatment can be crucial in helping individuals at risk. Seeking help from mental health professionals is vital for trauma survivors to address their mental health needs and reduce the risk of suicide.
